There were some good results but ultimately he fell short of expectations. That’s how the 2015 season panned out for Riccardo Zoidl (Trek). "My season was solid, but not great," the Austrian told radsport-news.com.
Zoidl was motivated to start his second WorldTour year - perhaps too motivated. "I wanted too much and as we know, that rarely leads to anything good. Already in the spring I've messed everything up due to my eagerness,” the 27-year-old said.
Zoidl showed his skills with a fourth place the final time trial at the Etoile de Besseges (2.1) and mainly at the Tour of California (2.HC) which he finished in eighth place. In the Austrian Championships he was unable to defend his title in the road race where he was twelfth but he took a nice second place in the time trial.
It also went well at the subsequent Tour of Poland (14th place). However, the Vuelta was unspectacular. Next year things have to go better for the winner of the 2013 Tour of Austria. "I have learned from the mistakes,” he said.
In 2016 Zoidl will mainly focus on the one-week stage race and he wants to be in the mix. "I know that I have the potential, and I am very motivated. I will try to maintain the necessary calmness,” said the stage race specialist that wants to get selected for a Tour de France debut by having a good spring.
