Edoardo Zardini again showed that he is one of the best climbers in the Tour of Britain when he helped blow the race to pieces in today's hard stage 7. The Italian now goes into the time trial in third overall.
Having already won the queen stage, Edoardo Zardini tried to make use of the final climbs of the Tour of Britain to distance some of the time triallists. Together with teammate Francesco Manuel Bongiorno, he briefly managed to do so but in the end things came back together.
”I’m quietly happy about today's stage," he said. "The finale was really demanding but the peloton also pulled hard earlier. With Manuel we raced well. We attacked because we wanted to get more seconds on some riders, thinking of tomorrow's time trial. We reduced the group at the top of the last climb but then several riders came back. Now the classification is still close, ten riders within one minute. Tomorrow I’ll try to do my best and the regardless of the result, it will be okay."
”It was a really demanding stage, the bunch never stopped chasing and so the breakaway was really strong as they stayed away," sports director Roberto Reverberi said. "In the finale our two young riders Zardini and Bongiorno were able to follow the best on the last climbs and also to attack. Looking at the GC, Edoardo is still 3rd. Tomorrow we don’t have to think a lot. We only have one strategy: give everything and then see which result we get."
