On stage 19 of the Italian grand tour, Zakarin suffered a high-speed crash on the descent of the Colle dell’Agnello. At first, things looked very serious for the Russian, as he lay motionless on the grass at the side of the road with his bike having gone even further down the road. Despite this, Zakarin escaped with a broken collarbone and fractured scapula. Going into that stage, Zakarin lay fifth overall and it was feared that it would be impossible for him to recover in time for the Tour.
According to Cyclingpro.net, though, Zakarin is back in training and his recuperation has, so far, been swift enough to place him in contention for the Tour selection.
