Mauro Finetto continued to rebuild his career when he took his first win since a year off in today's GP Lugano. The victory comes as the culmination of a series of great results and is a continuation of a great start for his YellowFluo team.

YellowFluo manager Luca Scinto has a reputation of rebuilding the careers of promising talents whose progress have stalled. That's what he did for riders like Giovanni Visconti and Filippo Pozzato and that's the way he wants his project to continue.

One of the next riders on his list is Mauro Finetto who was a promising rider with teams CSF Group Navigare and Liquigas for several years. With good climbing legs and a fast sprint, he won two stages of the 2009 Tour of Turkey and the Hel van het Mergelland that same year.

However, his progress stalled and after the 2011 season he had to take a year off, doing some mountainbike racing in the meantime. For the 2013 season, he was given a second chance at Scinto's team and towards the end of last year, the results started to come.

He finished in the top 10 in GP Costa degli Etruschi, Milan-Torino, Coppa Sabatini, and Giro dell'Emilia during a golden run in September and October and in 2014 he has continued his progress. He was 2nd behind teammate Simone Ponzi in Etruschi and today he was the fastest in a select group that decided the hilly GP Lugano one-day race.

Finetto was overjoyed to repay the faith from his team.

"I'm happy with this result and I want to dedicate it to the team," he said. "[Angelo] Citracca and Scinto believed in me and gave me a chance after a year with mountain biking. Winning was the best way to repay the trust, and it rewards myself for the many sacrifices I have made.

"Today everything went well," he added. "In contrast to what we did in Laigueglia where the team worked hard all day, we preferred to have a follow-and-wait tactics in today's race as one of my friends, [Francesco] Failli, initially was part of a breakaway. In the end, e left it to others to animate the race.

"Towards the end I considered attacking on the descent after the attacks from Ulissi and the response from Bongiorno but the final two kilometres were flat and so I decided to not waste any energy and focus all mye energy on the sprint. It went well.

"The season has started well and we hope to continue that way. The end of last season made me realize that I could get good results and Luca Scinto gave me this winning mentality, giving me more confidence in my abilities. I just had a great desire to prove to myself that I could still win and do well and this determination was rewarded today."

"It's a double satisfaction, because we won and we did it with one of our gambles," Scinto said. "Mauro is a talent, a complete athlete with many excellent qualities. We followed him during the winter and we worked so thoroughly on the preparation and the motivation. We have prusued this victory, and it is arrived in the best possible way. We are a team that aims to revive riders like Mauro and this success is the success of a working method and a philosophy of the group."
