Jempy Drucker finished fourth for the BMC Racing Team Thursday at the Amgen Tour of California while Danilo Wyss earned the Amgen Breakaway from Cancer Most Courageous jersey for his heroics out of the breakaway.
Mark Cavendish won his third stage of the race while Drucker was in the top 10 for the third time, adding to a third-place finish on Stage 1 and seventh-place result on Stage 4.
Toms Skujins (Hincapie Racing) kept the overall lead while four BMC Racing Team riders remain within a minute of him: Ben Hermans (6th, at 47 seconds), Joey Rosskopf (11th, at 47 seconds), Manuel Senni (17th, at 47 seconds) and Danilo Wyss (22nd, at 56 seconds).
Wyss, who was fifth on Stage 3, attacked what was left of a six-man breakaway group in the final kilometers of the 154-km race. In pouring rain under darkened skies, he tried valiantly to hold off the charging pack but was overtaken with three kilometers to go. Wyss is the second BMC Racing Team rider to earn the special white-and-blue classification jersey this week. On Stage 3, Daniel Oss won the honor after spending his second straight day in the breakaway.
“We had a good group; we were working together all day,” Wyss said. “They never gave us much of a gap, the best was 3:30, not enough. At the end I tried with Alex Howes, caught at four km to go, so it was close.”
The BMC Racing Team continues to lead the team standings heading into Friday's individual time trial. The 10.6-kilometer race against the clock has been relocated from Big Bear Lake – where snow was expected to fall Friday – to Santa Clarita. The new course will start and finish in the Six Flags Magic Mountain amusement park and be run on flat course.
