Danilo Wyss (BMC) took the biggest win of his career when he claimed a maiden Swiss road race title. Having reached the finish in a 4-rider group, he held off Mathias Frank (IAM) and Sebastien Reichenbach (IAM) in the sprint while Michael Albasini (Orica-GreenEDGE) crashed in the final turn.
This year Danilo Wyss has been selected for his first Tour de France and he couldn't have wished a better build-up to the big event. Today he took his first pro win at the Swiss road race championships after a dramatic race.
Being part of a strong team that could also count on support from the BMC Development riders, he used his teammates to bring a breakaway back with 10km to go. From there, he went on the attack and arrived at the finish with IAM climbers Mathias Frank and Sebastien Reichenbach and pre-race favourite Michael Albasini.
Wyss and Albasini were clearly the fastest but when the latter crashed in the final turn, the outcome was a foregone conclusion. Wyss easily beat Frank and Reichenbach in the sprint while his teammate Silvan Dillier led the first big group home 19 seconds later.
Wyss will proudly sport his new jersey in the Tour where he will line up as a support rider for Tejay van Garderen.
