UCI road world championship 2014, planned to held in Ponferrada, Castilla y Leon, Spain, will surely go ahead as planned. CSD(Spanish Department of Sports) plays a huge role in ensuring the planned race, as the CSD and UCI produce a joint press release.
With the situation of Spanish ecomony, one would doubt if the worlds will actually be held in Spain. After all, Spanish World Tour cycling team reduced to only one team, and a lot of Spanish road cycling races became smaller in length and some even disappeared.
Luckily the Spanish authority intervenes. "As confirmed by the CSD, the strong leadership shown in this process and close understanding with the UCI has ensured the full launch of the UCI Road World Championships, Ponferrada 2014." as the press release says.
Aside of CSD, the Assembly of Castilla and Leon plays a significant role, too.
"Without their President's help, this great moment for Spanish cycling would not have been possible." says CSD president Miguel Cardenal.
Brian Cookson, UCI president, also is delighted with the process.
"I was delighted to visit the CSD in December to present UCI WorldTour awards to Spanish teams and riders, reflecting the importance of this sport in a country rich in the history of cycling. We are very much looking forward to adding to this great history in Ponferrada later this year. The World Championships is a monument of cycling, and I am sure we will be privileged to see some fantastic racing over an excellent and challenging course."
The Organising Committee of the UCI Road World Championships will meet Cardenal and CSD Director General Munoz on Feb 4th, in Madrid.
