Bradley Wiggins has made it clear that he will ride the world championships road race in support of teammate and arch rival Chris Froome. Having already played a part in Mark Cavendish's 2011 victory, the 2012 Tour de France champion hopes to get the chance to contribute to a similar success.

Much has been said about the tainted relationship between Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome but now the former makes it clear that he is ready to support Froome at the world championships in Florence. Wiggins is focused on the time trial where he hopes to win the rainbow jersey himself but in the time trial he is ready to play a domestique role.

While Wiggins has long made it clear that the time trial would be his end-of-season target, Froome put his hand up for a leadership role in the road race after his successful Tour de France. Since then, Froome has been preparing the race in Florence by riding the USA Pro Challenge and the two Canadian WorldTour races in Quebec and Montreal.

Last week Great Britain published its long list for the world championships and both Froome and Wiggins figured on that list. Interviewed prior to this week's Tour of Britain, the latter has confirmed that he plans to ride the race.

"Chris made his intentions clear after the Tour that he wants to try to win the Worlds road race," he told Sky Sports. "I've put my hand up to be a part of that team to try and assist him. I was selected for that last week."

Wiggins and Froome both played a support role when Mark Cavendish became world champion in 2011. Wiggins hopes to be part of a similar success this time following a poor performance at last year's race when he turned out completely out of form.

"Cycling is a team sport," he added. "The opportunity to ride at the world championships with good form for your country... I was at the world championships last year with no form and that's not a nice place to be. I would relish the opportunity to ride the Worlds for Great Britain whoever the leader is, and do the job that's asked of me. One of my best sporting memories was from two years ago assisting Cav when he won the Worlds and if that's the case and Chris manages to win it and you can play a part in it, it's a very satisfying thing."

According to recent reports, Wiggins has put on weight to focus on time trials and will never again race a grand tour as leader. He plans on doing one last year on the road before turning his attention on the tract and the 2016 Olympics.

He refuses to go into a discussion of his future and says that it's up to his team to decide.

"There's been said a lot since the Tour about putting weight on and going for the hour record and people start make things up," he said. "At this stage, I'm just focused on this next week, on getting to the end of the season, have a holiday and then decide about my future. I don't want to create any more problems. Whatever I am asked to do, I'll do. Whatever I'm told to do, I'll do."

Today Wiggins faces he last important time trial test ahead of the Worlds in the Tour of Britain. Starting at 13.15 CEST you can follow the stage on CyclingQuotes.com/live.
