Bradley Wiggins has used the Giro del Trentino to shift from classics to stage race mode and based on his performance in today's queen stage, the transition is progressing smoothly. Today he finished 11th in the race's queen stage after staying with the GC contenders almost all the way to the end.
Bradley Wiggins battled amongst an elite front group on the final climb as the Giro del Trentino came to a close.
The Brit came home 11th on the hors-categorie summit as he ramps up his preparation for the upcoming Tour of California.
The Tour de France winner immediately went on the offensive as the race hit the Monte Bondone and made his way into a group containing race leader Cadel Evans and nearest rival Domenico Pozzovivo (AG2R-La Mondiale).
Evans (BMC Racing) completed a strong week of racing with overall victory and was content to cover the moves of his rivals on the final summit finish, coming home fifth behind the day's solo victor.
Spaniard Mikel Landa (Astana) overhauled the attack of Louis Meintjes (MTN Qhubeka) in the steep final kilometres to claim the stage victory on the final day.
Crossing the line with a margin of 10 seconds over the young South African, Landa pushed clear in the closing stages on the famous snow-capped Monte Bondone climb.
Wiggins eventually crossed the line 1:04 back following a stint on the front, while Pozzovivo and Prezemyslaw Niemiec (Lampre-Merida) made sure of their podium positions, 50 seconds and 1:01 respectively behind Evans.
Kanstantsin Siutsou slipped back on the mountain but ended the race 16th overall as he looks ahead to the Giro d'Italia in May.
With all eyes on the final climb, Sports Director Dario Cioni descrived the plan which included putting Irishman Philip Deignan in the break.
"We had a meeting before the stage and the execution was perfect," he confirmed. "We didn’t want the break to go to the end so we made sure Philip was in there. It gave him a chance to get out there and ride but his decent GC position also meant that BMC had to chase a bit.
"The plan was for Kosta to go hard for a GC place and for Brad to look to see what he could do on the stage. Brad managed to get up there with the select lead group which was good to see and he has been climbing better and better this week."
