The International Cycling Union (UCI) has accepted the new dates that will allow the Spanish Vuelta a Asturias to return to the calendar on May 2 and 3. That was confirmed by organizers Club Ciclista Aramo. It will be with "a small two-day format" and after last year's cancellation, the stages are likely to finish in Pola de Lena and Oviedo.
The economic crisis has affected the Asturian race that was reduced from its usual 5 to 3 days in 2012 and was down to just 2 days in 2013. In 2014, the race was not held.
"Following the cancellation of the 2014 edition due to well-known problems, the organizers are working on the next edition which will have a reduced two-day format. We are cooperating with the municipalities of Oviedo and Lena, so that the stages are likely to finish in Pola de Lena and the capital of the principality."
Javi Moreno, Beñat Intxausti and Amets Txurruka are the most recent winners. Iban Mayo, Joseba Beloki, Laurent Jalabert, Abraham Olano, Alex Zulle, Miguel Indurain, Erik Breukink, Piotr Ugrumov and Raul Alcalá are among the winners in the heydays of Vuelta a Asturias which held its first edition in 1925 and which was been held continuously since 1968. In 2010, the traditional warm-up race Subida al Naranco disappeared from the calendar.
