A Belgian prosecutor has decided that Alexandre Vinokourov and Alexandr Kolobnev will stand trial for charges of private corruption, after Vinokourov agreed to pay Kolobnev £150,000 in order to win Liege-Bastogne-Liege while the two were up front in the race-winning move in 2010.
Both men could face between half a year to three years in prison if found guilty, as well as a fine of between 300,000 to 600,000 Euros. However, the duo are fighting the case, saying there isn’t enough evidence and more legal documentation is required.
The prosecutor, Frederic Demonceau, has viewed evidence over the last year and a half, including e-mails between the two riders and bank accounts in Switzerland and Monaco.
The instructing judge will decide if the case should go to trial by October 15.
