Italian Professional Continental team Vini Fantini-Selle Italia already have more than enough on their plate after the recent positive test of Mauro Santambrogio who placed 9th in the Giro d’Italia for the team, winning the stage to Jafferau along the way. But now there are allegations that the team dodged a doping control at another race, indicating that Santambrogio’s misdeeds may not be as unique as claimed.

Australian broadcaster SBS’ Cycling Central posted a link to an article about Santambrogio’s positive on their Facebook page. One of the comments came from Andrew Christie-Johnson, team manager of Australian Continental team Huon Salmon-Genesys Wealth Advisers, who spoke of a questionable incident after the last stage of the 2.2-rated Tour of Kumano in Japan on Sunday.

Christie-Johnson commented: “We raced [against] this team in Kumano just days ago. They managed to talk themselves out of a random test on the last stage. Said they would miss their flights home. 8 hours later we had tea with them prior to their departure from Japan. [They] didn't seem in any rush then.”

“Seemed very wrong that the Japanese drug testers just took their [Vini Fantini-Selle Italia] rider off the random list for the stage and swapped it to another rider from another team, especially in light of what just happened,” referring to the di Luca positive (Santambrogio’s positive test wasn’t published yet on Sunday).

He later added: “This team should have their license withdrawn.”
