According to Wielerflits.nl, Vicenza wants to become a host city of the World Championships in 2020. The Italian city decided to stand as a candidate after they successfully hosted the finish of the stage 17 stage of the 2013 Giro d’Italia, where Giovanni (Movistar) Visconti emerged as a winner.
Reportedly, Gazzetta dello Sport suggests that the road race of the 2020 World Championships could start at the famous St. Mark’s Square in Vanice before heading to the usual circuit around Vicenza.
Most likely, Vicenza will be confirmed as an official candidate during the meeting of the Italian Cycling Federation held on December 15, while the final UCI decision will be announced by the end of 2016 season.
Meanwhile, next two editions of the event will be held outside Europe – in Richmond (United States) and Doha (Qatar) respectively, before returning to the old continent in 2017 as Bergen (Norway) as a host city.
