Even though the Giro d’Italia organizers, RCS sport, are reluctant to make any official announcements as the weather in the mountains tends to change very rapidly, race director Mauro Vegni unofficially revealed Italian media that current conditions on Gavia and Stelvio passes are perfect to play the queen stage on its original route tomorrow.
The short but brutal stage from Ponte di Legno to Val Martello is a copy of the one that was cancelled last year due to bad weather conditions, but everything suggests that riders will be allowed to fight their battles on the slopes of Gavia and Stelvio this time around.
Even though there will be no official announcement on that matter before tomorrow and heavy machines are still working to make slopes of Stelvio passable for riders, Vegni told Italian media that he is optimistic about playing the 2014 Giro d’Italia queen stage on its initially planned route.
“It’s not official as of today,” the Giro d’Italia director started, “The weather changes quickly in the mountains.”
“Current conditions are ideal for running tomorrow’s stage.”
