Tom Veelers (Giant-Alpecin) needs additional time to recover from the knee injury that he sustained at the beginning of the year. To overcome his injury, he underwent keyhole surgery at OCON in Hengelo, the Netherlands, three weeks ago.
Initially Veelers was expected to make his comeback at the Tour de Romandie, starting next Tuesday, but the performance team, in consultation with the team physician, decided that his return to competition should be delayed.
Team physician Anko Boelens said, “Tom is recovering from keyhole surgery to repair a small cartilage imperfection. He is recovering steadily, but Romandie will be too early for him.”
Veelers added: “I was hoping for Romandie but unfortunately we need to postpone my comeback. At this moment it is better to fully recover than to move into competition too early. There are plenty of goals ahead of me this season so I don’t want to force anything now.”
Carter Jones will replace Veelers in the Tour de Romandie.
