In the Tour de France, Sep Vanmarcke will have to work for LottoNL-Jumbo leaders Robert Gesink and Wilco Kelderman. In the stage witht he cobbles onTuesday he will be allowed to do his own race. "I hope to be spared from bad luck and hope for bad weather."
The stage from Seraing to Cambrai is perfect for the cobbles specialists. "It is not a mini-Paris-Roubaix, but it is difficult enough to have a good fight," Vanmarcke told Sporza.
"I may take my own chance, but that does not mean I get support from my teammates like in the spring . They will have to help the leaders."
Vanmarcke knows the stage well. He has done it twice and also looked at a video.
"On Tuesday, I will know every stone. This stage will have no secrets for me. There are too few cobblestones to call it a mini-Roubaix, but the course will be hard enough.
"I hope to be spared from bad luck (like last year) and I hope for bad weather. If I can believe the forecasts, we will have rain on Tuesday. That's good for me. Then it will be a harder race."
However, Vanmarcke is a bit scared by the heat that is forecasted for the coming days.
"In the heat, I have always had difficult days, like two years ago in Corsica. You hear on the radio that you should avoid strenuous activities and we are going to a Tour de France. That is a bit crazy."
