The Vuelta has almost come to an end. The only thing that is left is a stage of 104.8 kilometres from Las Rozas to Madrid. In the Spanish capital the riders will ride nine laps on a 5.8 kilometres long circuit.

Lotto Soudal sprinter Tosh Van der Sande gives his preview:

“We had to wake up early today because at twenty to nine we had to take the train to Madrid. The end is near, but for me it’s still an important stage. I’m very tired though. I had ups and down since my crash on Sunday. Recovering from the injuries costs energy.

“Today is one more chance for me to achieve a good result. Traditionally it will be a slow pace before we get to Madrid and then the tempo will be raised on the circuit. There is always a very small chance that an escapee wins the stage, but I think it’s very unlikely today. On this circuit it’s very difficult for a break to stay ahead. The peloton can always see them. There are different teams who will want this stage to end with a bunch sprint. Etixx – Quick-Step for example will definitely aim for a sprint with Gianni Meersman. Another important factor is the points jersey: Alejandro Valverde can still claim the first place. So that could play a role as well today.

“After today I will take one week rest before I’ll participate in some Belgian races. This is the third time I’ve completed the Vuelta and those two previous times I achieved good results in the last races of the season. I’m sure I will benefit from riding the Vuelta this year as well.”
