On day ten of this year’s Vuelta, a short stage with two ascents was scheduled. The peloton had to cover 146.6 kilometres between Valencia and Castellón.
A group of 40 riders managed to get away after a few kilometres, among them Maxime Monfort and Jurgen Van den Broeck. The break of the day was caught at 55 kilometres of the finish. On the final climb several riders tried to get away but they never got a big advantage. They were caught at 4.5 kilometres of the finish.
Eventually the stage ended with a sprint. Sbaragli was the fastest, just ahead of Degenkolb and Rojas. Tosh Van der Sande sprinted strongly to a fourth place. Tom Dumoulin remains leader.
“From the beginning of the stage it was a real race and the speed was high," van der Sande said. "A group of 40 riders eventually managed to get away but Trek and Giant-Alpecin kept a strong pace in the peloton so the leaders didn’t get too much advantage. Everything came back together before the final climb. On that final ascent I was dropped for a moment but I could rejoin the peloton just in time.
“The stage ended with a bunch sprint and I said to myself not to make the same mistake as I did in the previous sprint where I didn’t went full gas. I waited for the right moment and then gave my all with a bit more than 200 metres to go. I finished fourth but I rather lose in such way. The riders that passed me at the end are very good so I’m happy with this result.
"Tomorrow it’s the first rest day and that isn’t unpleasant. Physically speaking a rest day isn’t always good, but mentally it can be good to think about the past few days. Certainly after the recently occurences with Kris Boeckmans we’re going to try to prepare ourselves mentally for the next two weeks.”
