For the first time since he won the rainbow jersey, Mathieu van der Poel was unable to come out on top when he had to settle for second in the final race of the Superprestige series. However, the Dutchman won the overall title with a one-point advantage over Kevin Pauwels.
Van der Poel managed to escape several times but he was always caught back. "I hit a hole a few times, but always rode myself back into contention in the sand," he told Sporza.
"Then I hit another hole and crashed. That hurt and I took some time to recover. When Kevin went away with Van Aert, I thought I had lost the overall victory. But in the final lap I rode as fast as I could."
Van der Poel took his first overall series victory at the elite level. "And I'm Dutch champion and world champion. I would had signed for this before the season."
