Mathieu van der Poel again proved that he is able to mix it up with the best in the elite cyclo-cross races when he finished third in today's Druivencross Overijse. However, the Dutchman was left with many regrets after a race in which he felt he was the strongest rider.
Mathieu van der Poel looked like a likely winner of the Druivencross in Overijse when he rode away from everyone with a few laps to go. However, after hitting the deck, he was brought back and appeared to be suffering in the final part of the race before crossing the line in third.
Van der Poel hasn't won a race since October 5 and is starting to get a bit frustrated.
"Every time I am close," he told Het Nieuwsblad. "But I never win. It's not that I am super disappointed but this is again a missed opportunity. It is increasingly difficult to win. However, I had the impression that I was the strongest man in the cross but in the last lap I had some problems with my gear and I also had a small crash. Then I knew it was over."
