Tom Van Asbroeck has had a very consistent season so far and today he again proved his big potential when he sprinted to second in the GP de la Somme. With several teams showing interest in the talented Belgian, he says that there is a big chance that he will join the WorldTour next year.
Since he finished 3rd at the 2012 U23 World Championships, Tom Van Asbroeck has been regarded as one of the upcoming stars but instead of joining a major team, he has been riding for the smaller Topsport Vlaanderen team where he has been given a leadership roles. He has paid back the confidence by taking several strong results, including a victory in the Coupe de France race Cholet Pays de Loire.
Today he was back in the spotlight in another Coupe de France race when the GP de la Somme came down to the expected bunch sprint. The Belgian took another top result when he finished 2nd behind Yauheni Hutarovich despite the team being undecided about which of their sprinters to focus on.
"Both Kenneth Vanbilsen and I had three teammates to support us during the race," he told Directvelo. "We both did the sprint on our own. I felt good. I appreciate like the Coupe de France races. What I really like are sprints that are slightly uphill.
"I'm not in great shape now. After the classics season, I raced in Frankfurt last Thursday. The finish was flat, so I didn't need to be at my best to make a mark. I will continue with the 4 Days of Dunkirk."
Van Asbroeck has attracted the interest of several WordTour teams and Lotto Belisol have made no secret of the fact that they would like to sign both him and Vanbilsen. Van Asbroeck admits that there is a great chance that he will be riding for another team next year.
"It is too early to talk about 2015, but there is a good chance that I will sign with a WorldTour team," he said.
