With his win in Loenhout, Wout van Aert took his fourth victory in the Bpost Bank Trofee. "Today I wanted to defend or improve my position in the standings on this tough course. It is fantastic that I succeeded," he told Het Nieuwsblad after the race.
"Today it was a really tough course," he added. "I came here at the start with the intention to defend my overall lead in the standings. With this tough course, I could not focus just on that. With Mathieu van der Poel, I had the ideal partner in the fronr group."
Nonetheless, van Aert was not comfortable that he would win the race. "Initially, I thought that I would come up short in the final lap but in the final two laps, I could stay with the others."
Did the Vastgoedservice rider not suffer in the cold? "It looked cold but actually it was not cold at all," he said. "The body has no time to get cold on this course. Therefore I was not affected.
"It played into my favour that I could stay up front. In the back, the pace may have gone down because they looked at each other. That was only good for the overall standings. It should be impossible to miss the win," he said. "A win and a better position in the standings! It was a fantastic day."
