As it was expected, Alejandro Valverde decided to skip the last WorldTour event of the season, the Tour of Beijing, shortly after Alberto Contador’s (Tinkoff-Saxo) withdrawal from the event has been announced.
Having his victory in the 2014 individual rankings unofficially confirmed with 66 points advantage over runner-up Contador gained in Il Lombardia on Sunday, Valverde had no further incentive to participate in the Chinese event.
The 34-year Spaniard predictably used is as an opportunity do finish his successful season, letting last year’s champion Beñat Intxausti lead Movistar team in his title defense. Eros Capecchi will fill his spot in the Spanish team’s roster.
Movistar roster for the 2014 Tour of Beijing consists of:
Beñata Intxausti, Eros Capecchi, Jasha Sütterlin, Giovanni Visconti, Dayer Quintana, Pablo Lastras, Enrique Sanz and Jesus Herrada
