Alejandro Valverde took over the lead in the WorldTour ranking from Alberto Contador, following his runner-up spot taken in the Il Lombardia on Sunday. Both Spaniards claimed to battle hard for a top position in individual standings, but while the former scored 80 points in “the race of the falling leaves”, the latter ended up empty handed after he heavily crashed in the last corner into the finish line Bergamo.
As a consequence, the Movistar rider currently leads in the WorldTour individual rankings with 686 points, 66 over second-placed Contador. The final battle for the lead will be fought later this month, however, as both Spaniards will take the start of the Tour of Beijing, held from October 10 to 14.
