Having hosted the road World Championships in 2012, Valkenburg is aiming for more. The Dutch city has applied to become the host of the 2018 cyclocross worlds.
Valkenburg wants to organize the cyclingcross Worlds on the Cauberg climb. The tourist destination has applied to become the host of the global championships in 2018, The Telegraph reports. In 1938, 1948, 1979, 1998 and 2012, the South Limburg city was already host city for the World Championships on the road. Since last year, it has been the host of the first World Cup of the cyclocross season.
"For the World Cup, we'll use a different course where we can receive 50,000 to 60,000 people. It is an ambitious plan, but Valkenburg has shown many times that it can organize such big events in a good way," Jo Römling, chairman of the organization of the Cauberg cross, tells
De Telegraaf .
In the 2014 Caubergcross, Lars van der Haar was the best as he had been in 2013. On the famous climb in Limburg, he held off Kevin Pauwels and Corne van Kessel to take his second victory of the season.
