Michael Valgren Andersen is in these days getting ready to make his debut on the UCI World Tour in Australia later this month. Originally he wasn’t assigned the Santos Tour Down Under, but due to the positive doping test from Australian Michael Rogers, he will take over his place in the roster.
Michael Valgren Andersen is one of the biggest Danish talents right now and the 21-year old signed a contract with Tinkoff-Saxo last year. Even though he knows how to ride a bike, he is aware that going from a continental team [Team Cult Energy] to a Pro Tour team is a challenge.
He hasn’t just been riding in Denmark the last seasons. He has also showed himself off on the international scene and that has been a success for the young Dane. Last year, he won the Liege-Bastogne-Liege U23 second year in a row, which makes him the one with most victories together with Raivis Belohvosciks.
Valgren explains what his ambitions for his first season at Tinkoff-Saxo are. He will be looking forward to gain a lot of experience from some of the older riders at the team.
”Having spent some time with my family and girlfriend this autumn and Christmas, I've had some time to ponder what to expect from myself in the coming year. First of all, I'm settled to gain a whole lot of experience and try to get as much wisdom as I can from the older riders on the team. I know my place in the team. I'm going to help out where I can, become stronger in the process and hopefully get a chance to eventually go for a result myself,” he says to the Tinkoff-Saxo webpage.
He has also taken a look back at his last season with the Danish UCI Continental team, Team Cult Energy. He says that the highlight of the season was to win the Liege-Bastogne-Liege U23 once again and signing a contract with Tinkoff-Saxo.
”Signing with Tinkoff-Saxo was a childhood dream come true and along with the victory in the U23 edition of Liege-Bastogne-Liege, it was the highlight of the season. It was very important to win Liege-Bastogne once again proving that it was no coincidence when I won in 2012. However, I was sadly disappointed after the U23 World Championships. I really had my mind up for something big and I wanted to have a satisfying finish of my U23-season.”
When Valgren was asked to look back on another highlight of the last season, he pointed out Jakob Fuglsang.
”On the big scene in 2013, I was pretty impressed by Jacob Fuglsang's achievement in the Tour finishing seventh. It's a big result and it's always cool to see a compatriot taking a role in the biggest tales of cycling,” he concludes.
