Movistar manager Eusebio Unzue recently made several key decisions. Especially the decision that quintana will ride Giro and Vuelta, and Valverde the Tour. Now Unzue talks about the decision to BiciCiclismo, and tells the great fortune to have two really capable leaders.
Not many teams can really say that they have two riders within reach of Grand Tour wins. Movistar has, and it's a "blessed problem" according to Unzue, "Now with the calendar is more justified to have dual leadership, to distribute pressure and responsibility. The great fortune to our two leaders, is that they can share the responsibilities involved."
Of course, with the age differential, Quintana will be the team's future face, but Valverde is still capable of winning something, as Unzue adds, "Valverde is a solid leader. Must trust in him." Valverde will challenge the Tour for maybe the last time.
And Quintana has a contract with Movistar till 2015, while Valverde's will expire after this season. "The mutual desire is to continue the relationship. Valverde is a man who has given us so much and we hope him continue to do so. It is vital to maintain the strength of this team."
Movistar is now riding the Tour of Dubai, with Malori the GC leader. Valverde is also riding there. The team will ride the Mallorca series and Vuelta a Andalucia after the race.
