Nikolay Trusov tried to mix it up with the big sprinters in stage 1 of the Tour of Britain but had to settle for 9th. The Russian still hopes to beat the sprinting giants later in the race.
The 130 kilometer long first stage of Tour of Britain in and around Liverpool was dominated by a breakaway but it was a day for the sprinters. Tinkoff-Saxo’s Manuele Boaro took a chance in the finale but was caught a few kilometers to go. Nikolay Trusov was in the mix for the stage win and finished 9th.
“I was in a rather good position entering the final kilometer but at some point I was boxed in and lost 15 meters and then it’s extremely hard to get back up. But my goal is to take that stage win and I think there will be another opportunity for me”, said a disappointed Trusov after the stage.
