New RCS president Urbano Cairo is looking into new options for the TV coverage of the Giro d’Italia.
During the presentation of the grand tour, this was mentioned as a possibility to increase the value of the product and now the situation seems to have evolved. The new president of RCS Media Group has reported prepared "a very competitive" way to sell the rights of the Corsa Rosa and this could happen soon.
According to reports by DataSport, the president of Turin seems to have "strong will to break up with [Italian broadcaster] RAI”. Apparently, Cairo has received "an excellent offer" from Discovery Channel which owns a number of channels. According to Cairo, however, "the potential audience may be worth much more than the proposal offers".
With the goal of reducing the gap to the Tour de France in terms of revenue, the plan is to increase TV revenues from Italy, but not only there as an important part of the plan consists of the sale of rights abroad.
