Dylan Teuns of the BMC Racing Team finished eighth Monday at the Aviva Tour of Britain while teammate Floris Gerts moved into fourth overall.
Czech Republic national road champion Petr Vakoc (Etixx-Quick Step) broke away with fewer than 20 kilometers to go and held on to win by seven seconds over Juan José Lobato (Movistar Team). Teuns arrived with the peloton two seconds later.
"I didn't expect it would be so hard and a long final, so it is a good result," Teuns said. "In the end, you hope for maybe more. But it is a really good result ahead of the next stages. Every day is different and the weather can change. There are so many things that can change. So we will see."
BMC Racing Team's Stefan Küng made a bid to catch Vakoc with an attack inside the last kilometer of the 159.3-kilometer race. But the world individual pursuit champion was swept up by the pursuers.
Gerts earned a pair of bonus seconds by finishing second in an intermediate sprint to help his move up the standings as Vakoc rode into the overall lead. The BMC Racing Team was also aggressive in the last 40 kilometers as Küng and Swiss national road champion Danilo Wyss made attacks. Wyss was part of a breakaway from which Vakoc made his winning move.
"You look at the finish and out of 40 or 50 guys, all five of our guys are in front," BMC Racing Team Sport Director Fabio Baldato said. "That means their condition is there. We don't have the fastest guy or the strongest, but we can still do some nice things in a race like this."
