As expected, the sprinters decided the final stage of the Volta ao Algarve. After the last attackers had been reeled in on the final kilometer, Andre Greipel (Lotto Soudal) won the bunch sprint ahead of Tom van Asbroeck (LottoNL-Jumbo) and Rüdiger Selig (Katusha). Phil Bauhaus of BORA – ARGON 18 sprinted to a very good 5th place, which is his first Top10 result of the season. After scoring a 10th place on yesterday’s queen stage, Jose Mendes finishes the Volta ao Algarve on the 16th rank in the general classification.
“That was a good closing to the tour. Actually, it was the first sprint for Phil in our team and therefore kind of a performance test for him. Christoph [Pfingsten] did a great job today by almost riding a lead-out for two. He brought Phil to the 800-meters-mark and from there Phil was in the wind. Given his speed and punch, Phil has the talent to be the runner-up behind Greipel. But for this, we were missing a second lead-out and the experience to stay out of the wind a bit longer today. Nonetheless, this is a great result and it’s good for the spirit if the first sprint ends in the Top10”, summarizes Sport Director Christian Pömer the Volta ao Algarve.
