Patrick Konrad of BORA – ARGON 18 played a key role in today’s first stage of the Tour of Oman. Konrad was one of four riders in the group of the day. The 23-old Austrian fought for important bonus seconds at the intermediate sprints which puts him in the lead of the young rider classification after stage 1. Konrad was also awarded the most aggressive rider of the stage so he was called to the podium two times.
The stage was decided by the sprinters. Andrea Guardini (Astana) won ahead of Tom Boonen (Etixx - Quick Step) and Mateo Pelucchi (IAM). Sam Bennett, winner of the final stage at the Tour of Qatar last Friday, sprinted to 8th place.
“Winning the two jerseys wasn’t actually planned today, but it’s a great start into the race for Patrick. Our objective is to win a stage and that’s why the team worked for Sam today. The guys prepared the sprint very well. He was in a good position at the last corner, but unfortunately he opened the sprint a bit too early. Tomorrow we can expect a tough stage. It’s a long day and shortly before the finish there is a climb that selected the group of sprinters last year. We’ll see how Sam feels tomorrow” summarizes Sport Director Enrico Poitschke the first stage.
