The second stage of the Tour of Oman included a climb within the last five kilometers which led to the widely expected selection in the peloton. Sprinting from a small group, Fabian Cancellara (Trek) won ahead of Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and Greg van Avermaet (BMC). Patrick Konrad of BORA – ARGON 18 started the stage as the leader in the young riders classification. He finished in 13th place with the same time as the stage winner, so he defended the white jersey.
Sport Director Enrico Poitschke about today’s stage: “We wanted to hold back during the stage and we were just cautious that no bigger group attacked. So we could concentrate completely on the tough finish. Patrick climbed over the last mountain with the best riders. He didn’t lose any time, he defended his jersey and he still sits in 3rd place of the GC. This result made it a great day - even though we couldn’t fight for the stage win but that was rather expected today. Now we focus on the third stage because it will be a great opportunity to score a win with Sam [Bennett].”
The third stage runs over 158 kilometers starting and finishing in Al Mussanah Sports City. Since the stage profile doesn’t include any major difficulty the day will be descided in a bunch sprint most likely.
