Escaping the peloton on the descent from the day's final climb, Andrew Talansky (Garmin-Sharp) used a powerful acceleration to outsprint his breakaway companions in today's third stage of the Paris-Nice. With the bonus seconds he takes over the leader's jersey and looks poised for a tilt at the overall victory.

A treacherous descent in rainy conditions proved to be the perfect springboard for young GC contender Andrew Talansky (Garmin-Sharp) to go on the attack in today's stage of Paris-Nice. With GC rival Richie Porte (Team Sky) he bridged the gap to a breakaway consisting of Andriy Grivko (Astana), Gorka Izagirre (Euskaltel), Romain Bardet (Ag2r - La Mondiale), David Lopez (Team Sky) and Davide Malacarne (Team Europcar), and the 7-man group managed to hold a hard chasing group.

In that chasing group most of the GC contenders sensed the danger with Talansky and Porte in front, and most of them contributed valiantly to the chase. In the end they managed to reduce the gap to just 7 seconds to remain in contention for the final victory. There is, however, no doubt that they were dealt a mental blow by their American and Australian rivals.

The day proved to be a disaster for a number of pre-race favorites. As a repeat of his 2008 experience in the race, Robert Gesink (Blanco) was again let down by descending abilities, and with teammate Wilco Kelderman he reached the finish line with a time loss of 1.05 to Talansky. Thomas Voeckler shook his head in frustration when he arrived 1.22 behind the day's winner while a puncture just at the bottom of the climb meant that Ivan Basso (Cannondale) lost all hopes for overall victory.

A 4-man group is kept under control

The stage was 170,5 km long, and with a second category climb just 15,5 km from the finish the riders had to turn on their climbing legs for the first time in this year's race. Immediately after the start a 4-man break with Mads Christensen (Team Saxo-Tinkoff), Sebastien Minard (Ag2r-La Mondiale), Alexis Vuillermoz (Sojasun) and Martijn Keizer (Vacansoleil-DCM) was established. They build up an advantage which reached its maximum at 4.05 65 km into the stage.

While Martijn Keizer (Vacansoleil-DCM) was first over the day's first two climbs to take over the climber's jersey from teammate Bert-Jan Lindeman, Cannondale assumed its position at the front of the peloton to protect Elia Viviani's overall lead. Seeing an opportunity for Sylvain Chavanel to take over the lead and for Gianni Meersman to win the stage, OmegaPharma-QuickStep put Tom Boonen and Stijn Vandenbergh on the front to assist Mauro Da Dalto and Edward King who had done the pace-making for most of the day.

With Tony Gallopin (Radioshack-Leopard) a strong contender for the stage win, Jens Voigt and Markel Irizar joined the pace-making with 36 km remaining, and it was evident that the breakaway was doomed. As the battle for position in the peloton heated up, the 4 escapees were finally absorbed 22 km from the line.

Sky applies the pressure

At the bottom of the final climb, Team Sky assumed their usual position at the front of the peloton to keep Richie Porte safe. Danny Pate, Xabier Zandio, Jonathan Tiernan-Locke, Vasil Kiryienka and David Lopez all contributed to a furious pace. Behind the selection was dramatic, and a lot of riders had to let the group go. Most notably overall leader Elia Viviani soon had to realize that his yellow dream only lasted one day.

Maxim Iglinskiy (Astana), Romain Bardet and Andriy Grivko all attacked on the climb, but Team Sky reeled everything back. Entering the dangerous and wet descent, Grivko put in another acceleration, and without really trying Vasil Kiryienka (Team Sky) ended up as his companion. However, the Belarussian crashed dramatically in a bend, and Grivko was left alone in the front. Soon after he was joined by Malacarne, Lopez, Bardet and Izagirre to form a 5-man lead group.

Behind Talansky and Porte had used the descent to create a gap on the other GC favorites and now tried to close the gap. Sensing the opportunity to gain important time, Lopez fell back to help his captain. The now three-man group came back to the front to make a 7-man group at the head of the race.

Behind, Tejay Van Garderen (BMC) desperately tried to get assistance from other GC contenders in the chase, and gradually more and more sensed the danger. Their efforts were, however, in vain. The escape reached the finish line with an advantage of 7 seconds, and Talansky burst ahead of Malacarne and Izagirre to take the biggest victory of his career.

The race continues tomorrow with a 199,5 km stage in the Massif Central. With 7 classified climbs - the last one just 8,5 km from the finish - Talansky will have a tough day in his first ever WorldTour leader's jersey.
