Ben Swift will undergo surgery on his shoulder following his stage one crash at the Tour de Yorkshire.

The Brit crashed on Friday on a slick descent on the road to Scarborough, forcing him out of the race. After an X-Ray in the hours after the crash, a further scan on Saturday revealed internal damage to the shoulder joint.

With an operation scheduled for Wednesday, Swift will be unable to travel to America for the upcoming Tour of California, and will now be supported by the team in his recovery.

"I've had a lot of great support this week and a lot of people asking how I am after the crash. I really want to thank everyone for that," Swift told TeamSky.com.

"The race was an incredible experience for as long as it lasted. I've never heard so many people shouting my name before. Even when we were in the most remote areas of the course there were still people there shouting. It's just a shame it ended how it did.

"As soon as I landed I felt it and knew something wasn't right. And because I was at the front when I crashed I got hit a lot from behind. By the time I managed to get up I couldn't move my arm and then the team car came.

"The silver lining was Lars winning the stage and the team obviously looks really strong here. I just hope they can bring it home on the final stage."

Team Sky Doctor Richard Usher accompanied Swift to the hospital following the accident and confirmed: "Following on from Ben's crash yesterday, and despite normal X-Rays, he went on to have an MR scan of his shoulder today (Saturday). This has shown that there is some internal damage to the shoulder joint, which is going to require surgery that will take place this week."
