“I started the sprint with 200m to go, as Bennett waited quite long and in that way he made it more difficult for himself, and I was able to sprint to victory. I am very satisfied with this result.”

Ramon Sinkeldam sprinted to victory in the Garmin Velothon Berlin, taking Team Giant-Alpecin's third victory in Germany this season.

Following two fourth places, in stage 2 of the World Ports Classic and the opening stage of the Bayern Rundfahrt, Sinkeldam was the fastest in the bunch sprint today and took his first win of the season. After strong chase work and a superb lead-out by the team, Sinkeldam timed his sprint to perfection and took the win in the German capital. Both Team Giant-Alpecin and Team Cannondale – Garmin did most of the chasing effort to close the gap on the four early escapees.

To make the day even better, Zico Waeytens sprinted to third place after completing the lead-out for Sinkeldam.

“I am very happy with this win. I am in good shape and had a good series of races in Yorkshire, Bayern and the World Ports Classic, where it did not work out a couple of times, so it is very nice that everything came together today," Sinkeldam said.

“It was a calm day with a small breakaway group, and the sprinters’ teams, including us, controlled the gap.

“In the finale we were able to execute our plan, and the guys put me into a good position so that I could get on Bennet’s wheel. That way I didn’t need the help of Zico [Waeytens], and he was able to take my wheel and sprint to a nice result too.

“I started the sprint with 200m to go, as Bennett waited quite long and in that way he made it more difficult for himself, and I was able to sprint to victory. I am very satisfied with this result.”

“It was a great win by the team, and we are very happy with it," coack Rudi Kemna said.

“It was a controlled race with not many exciting moments. There were four men in the break, so we didn’t need to spend a lot of effort controlling the race and chasing the escapees back.

“With 2km to go, Veelers organized the guys at the front. The lead-out was performed by Timmer and Fröhlinger, as we had planned. Depending on the situation, Waeytens was to do the final 500m, and when Sinkeldam was already in position he could go for his own sprint.

“The sprint went perfectly and Sinkeldam won. It was a good team performance.”
