Bretagne got close to a very big win yesterday when Erwann Corbel sprinted to 4th in Le Samyn. The young French sprinter regretted a mistake in the sprint which potentially cost him the victory.
On Saturday, Bretagne got their first win of the season when Florian Vachon won the Boucles du Sud-Ardeche. Yesterday their young sprinter Erwann Corbel could have doubled the tally when he finished 4th in the uphill sprint in Le Samyn.
Corbel finished very strongly and was seen passing several riders near the end. Afterwards, the young Frenchman admitted that a stupid mistake maybe cost him the win in the prestigious race.
"In the last five kilometres, there was a small cobbled climb and with my teammates I was really well-placed. This time I was 4th so most of the work was done correctly. With one kilometre to go, I found myself on Nacer Bouhanni's wheel, then I lost a little but I was still in the top 15.
"When the sprint was launched I was on the wheel of Napolitano. And then I made a small mistake 300m from the line. I wanted to shift but did it twice and ended in 53x11. If I had been in 53x13, I might have been able to win. I am disappointed as false flat sprints suit me well.
"My next race will be the Three Days of West-Flanders. We will work for Arnaud Gerard in GC as he is good in the time trial. In the road stages, I will get some help in the uphill sprints but I do not want to put any pressure on myself."
