Team Saxo-Tinkoff has been desperately looking for a new co-sponsor to replace Tinkoff Bank who will end their association with the team at the end of the season. The team will now hold a press conference on Thursday when important news for the future of the team will be announced.
The future of Team Saxo-Tinkoff has been in doubt ever since it was announced that Tinkoff Bank would stop as co-sponsor at the end of the season. Since then, team owner Bjarne Riis has been looking for a replacement but the search has been more troublesome than the Dane would have hoped.
During the world championships, he confirmed that he was close to an announcement of important news but didn't want to elaborate on the future of the team. Finally, he is now ready to reveal important aspects of next year's team as his team has invited to a press conference in Madrid on Thursday. Both Riis and the team's star rider Alberto Contador will be present.
Until now, the team has only announced contracts with 16 riders for the coming season and only neo-pro Michael Valgren Andersen has been confirmed as a new signing. The minimum requirement for a ProTeam is a 23-rider roster and Riis has to send in a list of riders to the UCI on October 20. This deadline has put Riis under pressure to finish his negotiations quickly.
Last week rumours circulated that Contador had accepted a pay cut to help the team but Riis has refused to confirm those claims.
