Aleksejs Saramotins (IAM) got his revenge after his defeat in the time trial when he secured an impressive seventh Latvian road race title. The IAM rider emerged as the fastest in a 7-rider sprint, beating Krists Neilands and Andris Smirnovs (Rietumu) into the minor podium positions.
While he has finished second in the time trial no less than five times in the row, most recently a few days ago, Aleksejs Saramotins has completed dominated the Latvian road race championships. He took his first win in 2005 when he started a three-year winning streak before he had two winless years. He was back on top in 2010, 2012 and 2013 and today he reclaimed the title he lost last year.
The 205km race in Dobele came down to a seven-rider sprint and here Konovalovas was the fastest as he beat the Rietumu pair of Krists Neilands and Andris Smirnovs in the battle for the champion's jersey.
Saramotins hasn't been selected for the Tour and so it is unclear when he will wear the jersey for the first time.
