Peter Sagan proved his versatility when he joined the breakaway in today's mountain stage of the Tour de France. Despite being unable to keep up with the best climbers, the Slovakian was pleased to have been part of the action in unfamiliar terrain.
Peter Sagan could be forgiven to have tried to save his energy in today's mountain stage of the Tour de France but the Slovakian had different plans. Instead of hiding in the peloton, he bridged across to the early break with Joaquim Rodriguez and Jan Barta and won the intermediate sprint to extend his lead in the points competition.
As expected, Sagam was unable to keep up with the likes of Rodriguez in the tough terrain and he slipped back around the midpoint of the stage. Nonetheless, he was pleased with his performance.
“I'm very happy that I made a breakaway in a mountain stage," he said. "I missed it in first place, then I rode away from the bunch with Purito. We've had to ride flat out to reach the front of the race. It was very hard and I've spent a lot of energy.”
