Yesterday, the 29th of May, the riders at the Tour of Belgium started with some minutes of delay to testify the concern of riders and teams about race safety. The incident during stage 3, where two motorbikes during the race caused another accident to the detriment of the riders, illustrated the importance of higher standards on the safety issue to better prevent unnecessary accidents in a sport that already has, for its nature, a certain level of risk.
This symbolic action was to show support for the riders who got injured in the accident and in particular show support for Stig Broeckx, his family and his team, as well as express the urgency for better safety measures.
The rider union CPA and teams association AIGCP appreciate the will of the other stakeholders in the sport of cycling to improve safety but at the same time both associations call for a faster implementation of new measures and for even higher standards. Safety should be an absolute priority for all stakeholders who all together form the sport of cycling.
The CPA and the AIGCP ask for the improvement of the organizational standards concerning safety to be included in the new Cahier des Charges for race organizers with more restrictive measures for the organizers and with more intensive and appropriate controls by the UCI, as well as a higher level of professional training for the race commissaires.
The CPA and the AIGCP will organize a meeting shortly where they will invite all the stakeholders to discuss this important issue and to make next steps in the realization of the above mentioned objectives.
