According to Danish newspaper BT, Rasmussen explains in his book that he met Sørensen on Mallorca early in 2003 as they were preparing for the 2003 season on separate teams.
According to Rasmussen, Sørensen was rather desperately searching for EPO and growth hormones. Rasmussen could easily get Sørensen out of his predicament since he knew a pharmacy in the town of Llucmajor where the illicit substances could be purchased.
“He [Sørensen] borrowed a CSC car [CSC was the precursor for the Saxo-Tinkoff team] and together we went to the pharmacy on the corner of the city square. I had been several times before and the pharmacist greeted me as if we had known each other for years. We purchased the necessary supplies of EPO and growth hormones and Nicki flew back home with the substances via the airport in Pisa,” Rasmussen writes in his book.
Frightened
Two weeks later Rasmussen drove to Sørensen’s home in Tuscany to collect his share of the substances. According to Rasmussen’s book Sørensen was so frightened of being caught that he had dug the substances into his garden.
Sørensen is familiar with Rasmussen’s allegations.
“I have no comments on the book. Like many others, I have assisted Anti Doping Denmark in their on-going investigation [into doping among Danish riders and on Saxo-Tinkoff]. I went to see them last week, and I told them about my career as a rider and thus I have told them everything that’s important for them to know. I will not go into any details about what I told Anti Doping Denmark” Sørensen told BT.
At 38 Sørensen is still active but his contract with Saxo-Tinkoff expires at the end of the year. According to BT Sørensen hasn’t signed a new contract with Saxo-Tinkoff and he refuses to comment on whether or not Rasmussen’s allegations or his own collaboration with Anti Doping Denmark might influence his further career as a rider.
