The Rabobank Development Team will cease to exist in its current form at the end of 2016. Marcel Wintels, president of the National Federation, made the announcement at the autumn conference of the Dutch Federation KNWU. The reason for the demise is the end of the sponsorship agreement between Rabobank and the National Federation.
At the end of the 2012 season, Rabobank ended the sponsorship of the Rabobank pro team after ti was revealed that there had been organized doping in the team. The bank continued its support of the development team which was taken over by the National Federation. Since then KNWU have been in charge of the Rabobank Development Team but it will stop at the end of the 2016 season. According to technical director Thorwald Veneberg, the federation will still invest in the development of young talent.
If KNWU manages to find a new backer, the team can make a new start on their own.
The future of the Rabobank-Liv women's team is still uncertain.
