Nairo Quintana has decided to do the Tour de Romandie as the final race of his spring season. The Colombian rider will return to competition at Tirreno-Adriatico and will then race the Tour of the Basque Country before he heads to Fleche Wallonne and Romandie.
According to BiciCiclismo, Quintana has just arrived at his base in Pamplona after he attended a meeting between the Spanish prime minister Mariano Rajoy and Colombian president Juan Manuel Santon in Moncloa.
After he had to skip the Vuelta a Andalucia and so missed the chance to test himself against Chris Froome and Alberto Contador, he will be back in action next week at Tirreno-Adriatico which will be his first race since the Colombian championships. After he missed the Andalusian race, Movistar and Quintana have decided to compensate for the lack of racing by riding in Romandie where he will end the first part of his season.
The Race of Two Seas will be his next race after the Tour de San Luis where he was third after five months without competing since his crash in the Vuelta a Espana, and the Nationals where he crashed on the finishing straight. Having finished second last year, he will not only be up against Contador and Froome in the Italian race. He will also test himself against Vincenzo Nibali, Rigoberto Uran and Joaquim Rodriguez.
Later he will get a feel of the cobbles ahead of the Tour de France as he will line up at Dwars door Vlaanderen (March 25) and E3 Prijs Harelbeke (March 27) like Alejandro Valverde did it last year. Then he will return to the Tour of the Basque Country (April 6-11), a race he won in 2012.
He will head to Belgian for some of the Ardennes classics, most importantly Fleche Wallonne (April 22) where he will get a feel of the Mur de Huy that features in the Tour, before he ends his spring campaign in Romandie. The Swiss race will start with a team time trial, ends with an individual time trial and includes a summit finish.
