In the first Giro d’Italia summit finish, the best of Bardiani – CSF was Stefano Pirazzi who attacked two times on the last part of the final climb, but he was always stopped by Team Astana.
At the finish line Pirazzi was 24th, 2:28 minutes behind winner Jan Polanc (Lampre – Merida) who was part of the early breakaway, and 0:57 behind the trio Aru, Porte and Contador who took the maglia rosa.
”I felt good today but both my attacks were stopped by Astana. It was impossible go away from the group of GC contenders. This morning I did not think the breakaway would go to the finish but I was wrong. To have been there would have been perfect and I could have played my chance to win. However I felt my shape is growing and I’m confident for the next mountain stages."
