On paper, a squad that includes names such as Thor Hushovd, Alessandro Ballan, Greg Van Avermaet, Philippe Gilbert and Taylor Phinney himself gives the BMC Racing Team a list of possible Classics winners that would probably be the envy of any other WorldTour team.
In an interview with Cycle Sport, Phinney indicated that the team structure has been too complicated in the Classics so far. Phinney also cited the great number of team leaders as a major reason why the team has thus far failed to claim a Classics win.
Phinney believes that the number of leaders will have to be reduced if the BMC team is to be successful in the Classics.
The BMC Racing Team has hired new staff members to identify the leaders for the Classics, including Sports Director Allan Peiper, former rider and Sky trainer Bobby Julich and sports physiologist Daniel Healey.
In the interview, Phinney elaborated on his views and said that this trio should combine their forces to identify a pre-race team leader.
On Friday the BMC Racing Team will present their roster for 2014 in Switzerland. Cyclingquotes.com will be present at the team presentation and will try to get additional comments from Taylor Phinney.
