Oss, Marcus Burghardt and Jempy Drucker had been working hard to chase a breakaway of three that slipped the peloton with 35 kilometers to go in the 218-km race. On a narrow, twisting descent, Van Avermaet flipped over the handlebars while trying to avoid another rider.
"My hip is hurting a little bit," Van Avermaet said. "It was a pretty bad crash. But I tried to come back easy to the finish, just not to be sore, because if you go directly in the car after the race, it's probably worse the day after. I feel OK. I feel a little bit of pain. We will see how it is tomorrow. I think I am still there for the other races."
Geraint Thomas (Team Sky) attacked out of the leading trio to solo to victory ahead of Zdenek Stybar (Etixx-Quick Step). Oss sprinted to his fourth top 10 result of the season with the remnants of the chase group 38 seconds later.
