Today, Nick Nuyens has announced that he will retire from professional cycling due to the fact that he was unable to achieve a new contract with a team. The 34-year old Belgian rider from the town of Lier will be remembered for his performances in the Classics.
Performances, which have given him some extraordinary results. Among them wins in the Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne, Paris-Brussels and the biggest achievement, the Ronde van Vlaanderen win in 2011. That year he also won the Dwars Door Vlaanderen.
“I still wanted to be a rider, so I didn’t want it to end this way. That it did not work out was a pity. I would like to stay in cycling and I will be open for any suggestions,” said Nuyens according to Het Nieuwsblad. “But the longer time that went b,y the clearer it was to me that it was best to stop cycling. I never fully recovered from my hip fracture.”
It was a setback for Nuyens when he realised he couldn’t return to pro cycling.
“It has taken some time to get over it, but fortunately I can look happily back on a brilliant career. It was much nicer than I had ever dared to hope before It started,” he said.
Nuyens also points to the fact that he got through a long and successful career without taking any shortcuts.
“I think it is very important that I can look at yourself in the mirror without any second-thoughts.”
