Jose Goncalves excelled in his second race for Caja Rural-Seguros RGA as he entered the break in the Challenge Mallorca and managed to win the mountains and special sprint competitions. Gonçalves' break was initiated by André Greipel who was joined by a group of 8 riders.
The team even managed to be on the podium three times as Lluis Mas was the best local rider.
José Gonçalves was happy after the race: "I felt good, but I finished the season late last year and have not had much time off. Even if I do not feel 100%, I'm happy with the race. Being in the escape and climbing onto the podium twice is a good start. It gives me motivation to keep training and try to give my best for Caja Rural-Seguros RGA."
Josemi Fernandez, director of the team, said that "there was an early break where we had no one but it was caught soon after. When they were back, Greipel attacked and Jose was very good to join him. He did well by winning both prizes. He gave us presence in the break and another rider in the group, Johann van Zyl, has been formed in our team also one cyclist was formed in our team which is always a great joy. Perhaps we expected to be better in the end but it is only the second day of competition and we will still have to ride a lot an gain confidence. While you should always aim for the maximum, you also have to be realistic."
Heiner Parra was the best rider from the team in 26th.
