France gets a new stage race next year. According to L'Equipe, the Tour de Provence has been added to the cycling calendar. The first edition is scheduled from the 23rd to the 25th of February.
The race is organized by newspaper La Provence which mentioned the possibility of having ten WorldTour teams at the start when the idea was first presented last summer. The race has been approved by the French Cycling Federation and is given a 2.1 status. With the Tour Haut Var (20-21) and the Classic Sud-Ardèche (27), there will be a full week of cycling in France.
The Tour de Provence will serve as a substitute for the Tour Méditerranéen. This French preparation race has been in financial difficulties for years and is currently not on the UCI calendar for 2016.
